PEARL RIVER COUNTY —
Three traffic stops made over two days ended with suspects being arrested on drug related charges.
Each stop began with a simple traffic violation, but observations by Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department narcotics investigators or deputies led to the discovery of drug violations, said Chief Investigator Donnie Saucier.
The first stop was on Sept. 19 as a narcotics investigator stopped a vehicle for traffic violations. Saucier said that during the stop, the vehicles’ occupants, 58-year-old Tamara G. Kaye of 231 Anchor Lake Rd., Carriere and 32-year-old Christopher A. Moore of 27 Sunny Acres Rd., Carriere, acted suspiciously.
Those actions led the detective to ask for consent to search the vehicle, which was granted by the occupants, Saucier said. Several doses of Xanax were found during the search, leading to both Kaye and Moore being charged with possession of a controlled substance, the chief investigator said.
On Sept. 20, narcotics detectives stopped another vehicle for speeding on U.S. Highway 11 near the Willow Bend mobile home park and came into contact with 29-year-old Tony G. Mitchell of 206 W. Sycamore Rd., and 32-year-old Brandi L. Croney of 150 Shorty Burgess Rd., Saucier said.
Beer, which is illegal in Pearl River County, which is dry, was seen in plain sight, prompting a search of the vehicle, Saucier said. A misdemeanor amount of marijuana and some drug paraphernalia were found during the search and the detective also determined Mitchell had two warrants with the Sheriff’s Department for DUI second and no driver’s license, Saucier said.
Both Mitchell and Croney were charged with possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia, the chief investigator said. Mitchell was additionally charged on the two traffic warrants, as well as for speeding, no driver’s license, no insurance and possession of beer, Saucier said.
After Croney had been taken to the county jail in Millard, a search of her person uncovered several prescription medications for which she did not have prescriptions, including Roxycontin, Lortab, Soma and Xanax, leading to additional charges of felony possession of a controlled substance and three counts of misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance, Saucier said.
During a separate traffic stop that day, a deputy pulled over a motorcycle rider for careless driving near Wheat’s Curve on Mississippi Highway 43 North. Saucier said as the deputy approached the motorcycle, he saw the operator throw an object into the nearby ditch.
Before fetching the unknown object from the ditch, the deputy spoke with the motorcycle operator, 41-year-old Jeffery S. Smith of 3 D Bales Rd., who was found to have a suspended driver’s license, no insurance and no motorcycle endorsement, the chief investigator said. Saucier said the deputy put Smith into custody for the traffic violations and then retrieved the discarded item from the ditch, finding a pill bottle with Smith’s name on it containing Roxycontin, Adderall, and Xanax.
Smith was charged with the traffic violations and two counts of felony possession of a controlled substance and one count of misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance, Saucier said.
