Woman charged with animal cruelty

Nicholson — A Picayune woman faces charges of animal cruelty after Picayune Police officers responded to a complaint and found her dog to be suffering from severe malnutrition.

Assistant to the Chief of Police Jeremy Magri said officers went to the home of 52-year-old Addie Bagley at 611 Jarrell St., after receiving a complaint that her white pit bull appeared to be malnourished on March 14.

Officers arrived and found the dog to be tied up in the yard, with no food or water within reach of the dog, Magri said. He said the dog’s bones were visible through its skin due to the malnutrition and it appeared to lack energy while the officer observed the scene. As the officer checked the scene, Bagley came out of her home and informed the officer that the dog had recently given birth to puppies and that is why the dog looked the way it did, Magri said.

The officer inquired about the current location of the puppies, and was told by Bagley they were in the trash can. Magri said the officer checked the trash can and found two deceased puppies inside it that appeared to have been about five weeks old.

Picayune’s animal shelter was notified of the find and the animals were taken to the facility for examination, Magri said. In the examination it was determined that the cause of death of the puppies was due to the malnourished state of the mother, Magri said.

Bagley was charged with animal cruelty and with confining of an animal without food or water, Magri said.
