PICAYUNE —
Picayune and Pearl River County were under a flash flood watch through Thursday morning and was under a tornado watch until 6 p.m. Wednesday, as a slow-moving cold front crossed South Mississippi, causing high winds and heavy rains, according to the National Weather Service.
Residents were watching East and West Hobolochitto Creeks, as forcasters expected crests of as much as a foot above flood stage because of heavy rains in the Pearl River County area.
Flood stage on East Hobolochitto is 15 feet at Caesar where that branch of Hobolochitto Creek is expected to hit at least 15.5 feet, and 15 feet at McNeill on West Hobolochitto where that stream is expected to rise to at least 16 feet. Both streams run together in Picayune, becoming Hobolochitto Creek, which drains through Picayune into East Pearl River.
A rain gauge at the Picayune Item showed that at 3 p.m. on Wednesday 0.65 inches of rain had fallen.
Picayune officials will be looking at a portion of East Picayune off East Canal Street that has experienced flooding in the past when Hobolochitto Creek floods.
Residents at Raven Wood subdivision near Nicholson, who have been experiencing flooding caused by Alligator Branch, were watching that stream with a wary eye, too, as the storm transited the Picayune and Pearl River County areas.
County officials were also watching Sones Chapel Road from McNeill to Millard, a portion of which near a bridge replacement project at Double Branch had been graveled to allow traffic use. However, officials said that if it rains too much, they would have to close Sones Chapel Road again.
The chance of percipitation on Thursday was 90 percent, weather forecasters said. Friday there is a 40 percent chance in the morning.
Forecasters said that, by the weekend, the system should niove off to the Eastern Seaboard.
The weekend is supposed to be sunny and warm.
