PICAYUNE —
Anyone interested in space, and John C. Stennis Space Center’s role in the future of space, is invited to head out to Wal-Mart on Saturday.
The space center is holding an event on space travel and its role at the Picayune Wal-Mart on Frontage Road from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Activities include learning about how people live and work in space, hands-on educational activities, facts about the International Space Station and the ability to view large images from the Mars rover Curiosity, according to a release from Stennis.
In addition to the educational activities, visitors will be able to collect commemorative items, including bookmarks, fact sheets and stickers from Stennis and NASA.
Stennis was built in the 1960s in Hancock County as part of the Apollo program that carried man to the moon. The facility has grown into the nation’s largest rocket testing facility and into a unique federal city. The site houses more than 30 state, federal, academic and private organizations along with several technology based companies, the release states.
More than 5,000 people are employed at the site, which provides an estimated $682 million in economic impact, the release states.

Ex-Picayune bank teller gets prison time for fraud
Former Picayune bank teller Vonetta Jordan has been sentenced to 17 months in prison for bank fraud and ordered to repay over $117,000.
On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Sul Ozerden also ordered two years of probation after her release from prison. -
