Some roads closed, others eyed for closing

PICAYUNE — At 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Pearl River County Emergency Management Director Danny Manley said county officials have closed Sycamore Road near its connection to West Union Road.

He said it was closed because of rising waters in East Hobolochitto Creek which runs near the intersection of the roads.

Friday evening skies turned blue and storms moved out but flooding was still going on as water that fell in the drainage system of East and West Hobolochitto creeks north of Picayune began to flow south.

Manley said Liberty Road has also been closed because of flooding at what is called Megehee’s Creek by local residents but is actually West Hobolochitto.

Manley said Anchor Lake Dam Road was also closed.

The Harvey Burks Road, which was closed on Thursday, has reopened.

Check the Item website for continuing updates on the flooding.

The main Hobolochitto Creek behind the Hermitage, which is formed by the conjunction of the East and West Hobolochitto creeks in northwest Picayune was out of its banks on Friday evening.

Readings at Caesar on East Hobolochitto was 17.45 ft. and on West Hobolochitto at McNeill was 19.57 ft. Both were at or near their crest. Fifteen feet is the flood stage at both stations.

Since Tuesday at 3 p.m., rainfall recorded at the rain gauge at the Picayune Item on Richardson-Ozona Road in Picayune is 6.45 inches.
