PICAYUNE —
The collection of hazardous waste for disposal after Hurricane Isaac has been rescheduled for Oct. 20, at city hall.
A previous announcement was released in the Item a week after a drop-off site had opened, but by that time the article ran, the site had closed due to low turnout. Although the release stated the site would be open for “approximately three weeks”.
According to a release from the Pearl River County Fire Marshal’s Officer, a new agreement has been worked out between the city of Picayune and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality to open a new collection site for one day, on Saturday Oct. 20, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
This new site, located behind city hall on Beech Street, will accept the same materials as the first, including gasoline, antifreeze, paints, stains, thinners, gas, kerosene, propane, oils, cleaning supplies, furniture polish, pool chemicals, thermostats, light ballasts, lawn fertilizers and insecticides. Signs will be posted at city hall directing people to the drop-off site.
The site will be open for one day, but the release states the fire marshal will work with MDEQ to determine the need for additional days.
