Pearl River County’s SPCA hopes to break last year’s number of 99 pets spayed and neutered by participating in the world wide World Spay Day.
PRC SPCA Special Projects Manager Carla Gerrard said this year’s effort will be sponsored by a number of entities, including Pet Smart Charities, the Humane Society of the United States, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Petco and the Doris Day Foundation.
Gerrard said this year she has contacted HSUS to have the numbers of animals spayed and neutered in this county included in the worldwide numbers.
Interested pet owners can get their cats spayed or neutered for $10, dogs will cost $15, Gerrard said. Coupons to participate can be purchased from the SPCA in Picayune, or Longleaf Farm and Garden in Poplarville. While the aim is to spay or neuter 125 animals, Gerrard said there is no limit on the number of coupons they can sell.
All procedures will be conducted by veterinarians, from Animal Health Clinic, Picayune Veterinarian Clinic, Mill Creek Veterinarian Clinic, Coast Veterinarian Hospital and South Pines Spay and Neuter Clinic, Gerrard said.
If a pet owner is unable to purchase a coupon in person they can call 1-866-989-7729. Calling that number will also provide times and locations for drop-offs and pick ups.
The cost of the procedure will also include free rabies shots and free microchipping, Gerrard said.
