PICAYUNE —
Residents in and around Picayune are invited to line the streets as members of the local National Guard unit leaves town for its final round of training before being deployed to Afghanistan.
The last time the unit was deployed was in 2003, at that time the unit was known as the 890th Horizontal and Vertical Engineering Company, and the deployment was to Iraq. Today the unit is organized as the 857th Horizontal Engineering Company.
Saturday, July 14, at 10 p.m. the unit will leave Picayune along Memorial Boulevard, then head down Mississippi 43 South to Mississippi Highway 603 on its way to Fort Bliss, Texas. At Fort Bliss the unit will receive its final round of training before heading to Afghanistan for a year-long mission to build roads for base camps.
All local residents are invited to line the streets Saturday night to show the local unit the city’s support as its members deploy.
“If you live on the route step out to the street and wave your American flag,” said Picayune Police Capt. Theresa Milar.
Special Projects Administrator Christy Goss said the Picayune Fire Department will hang the large American Flag over Memorial Boulevard for the departure.
In the unit’s absence city officials will set up fund raisers to raise money to be used to help construct a monument to commemorate the mission, Goss said.
Goss said the city is still taking donations of food or other supplies for a picnic for unit members and their families, which will be held earlier July 14. Donations can be brought to city hall.
