For every Fourth and New Year’s Day holidays fire works stands pop up for the celebrations across the county for folks to enjoy.
In the photo above, Heather Crowe at Keith’s, 3036 Hwy. 43 North, helps Dustin Brock stock up so he can ring in the New Year Monday night.
In the photo on the right, Brenda Wilson and her daughter, Heaven, await the rush at Turk’s at Inside Road and 43.
Officials urged caution to residents popping fireworks. Fireworks can be traced back to 7th Century China, where they were invented. Much of the fireworks sold in the U.S. are imported from China, the world’s largest manufacturer of fireworks.
The Chinese believe popping fireworks wards off evil spirits and brings good fortune to those who pop them.

BLAST SITE
An elevator well exploded Thursday evening at QUIKRETE® cement and concrete plant, located at 130 Huey Stockstill Rd., due to a buildup of propane gas, according to Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department officials. Coast Electric technicians were actively working at the scene on Thursday and Friday, making repairs to damaged electrical equipment.

Debris from the explosion could be seen near the edge of the property; it was cordoned off by police tape. Sheriff officials reported that only minor injuries were sustained due to the explosion. QUIKRETE® could not be reached for comment.

Local middle school student heading to rodeo nationals
Drew Howard is headed to Gallup, N.M., to compete in the girl’s breakaway and barrel racing events at the National Junior High Finals Rodeo, which runs June 23-29.

The Picayune Police Department implemented “Operation Breaking Dawn” on Thursday and arrested 17 suspects wanted on charges of sale of a controlled substance and seized cash, cars and drugs.
