On Monday, the Pearl River County school board approved setting up a Pearl River Central Athletic Hall of Fame.
The school board also appointed school board member Jeremy Weir to the Hall of Fame board of directors as the school board’s representative on the proposed five-member board. The board has yet to be formed.
Pearl River Central athletic director Andy Kivlan said that besides Weir, the board will be made up of the school district superintendent, the school’s athletic director, a prominent local civic and business leader, and a former coach or athlete.
Kivlan said that after the board is organized, it will solicit nominations from the public.
The vote was 4-0. Board members Jeff Jones, Weir, Rodney Dyess, and Michelle Boyd voted yes. Board member Twila Crabtree was absent. Dyess attended the session over an Internet hookup because he was out of town on business.
On another matter, Pearl River County School Superintendent Alan Lumpkin presented the school board with a new out-of-district student attendance policy in a thick handout and requested that the board study the packet.
He said administrators have been looking at a policy used by the New Albany school district.
He said the board would look at the possibility of adopting an “open policy” where any out-of-district student, if he or she meets the school’s criteria, could attend Pearl River Central schools if they pay a tuition fee.
However, Lumpkin said the board is nowhere near adopting a new policy. “We are only looking at it and seeing how it would impact us,” he said.
On another subject, Lumpkin told the board that the energy savings program and effort was still saving the district money, as administrators continue to wring out savings from the system by using the program.
He said that district-wide the school saved most recently $8,353 overall in its energy bill, as compared to the same time last year.
He said that he thought school administrators had gotten about all the savings out of the system last school year, “but they continue to squeeze out additional savings this year.”
The schools latest energy savings winner was the Lower Elementary, headed by Dr. Sharon Guepet, who managed to squeeze out a 21 percent additional savings, compared to the same time last year, which saved the school $2,001.
In other matters, the school board:
— Heard Lumpkin say the Alternative School won the monthly attendance award with a 99.5 percent attendance rating. He said district-wide attendance was at 95.2 percent.
— Approved purchase of two used school buses.
— Approved the high school prom for April 6 at the Fleur de Lis Event Center, Mandeville, La.
— Approved the following personnel recommendations: The resignation of high school teacher Randy Cuevas; hiring of Samantha Abbott as Alternative Education math teacher; hiring Casey Bauer to provide homebound speech services; appointment of part-time Reading Tutors Kristen Lee, Roxanna Walker and Sarika Ajmera; and naming Mike Posey as the full-time interim special education director for the remainder of the 2012-2013 school year.
— Approved the following 16th section land decisions: Canceled 1.67-acre lease in Section 16-6-16 for nonpayment; approved a rental increase on 3.81 acres in 16-5-16 for Todd and Sherry Lynn Wunder Babuchna; approved a rental increase for 1.458 acres in 16-6-16 for John H. Lilly; approved getting a new appraisal for the Millcreek Church lease for 6.61 acres in 16-6-16; approved getting an appraisal for a rent adjustment on 4.9 acres for Shannon Beal in 16-6-16; and approved a prescribed burn on 16-6-16 for $2,425 from the forestry escrow.
— Went into executive session to discuss a student matter.
