PICAYUNE — Pearl River County inmate Jason Allen Dinger took a chance and jumped the fence of the Pearl River County jail while being held on charges of aggravated assault and armed robbery for the alleged shooting of his step-brother.
Dinger, 28, with a last known address of 11559 Kirby Rd., Lot 36, Denham Springs, La., was caught later that same day.
Sheriff David Allison said the incident took place Monday afternoon between 2 and 2:30. As inmates were being held in the courtyard so a search for shanks or other contraband in their cells could be conducted, Dinger climbed up the basketball pole and jumped to the first fence surrounding the court yard.
As Dinger attempted to get to the other side of the fence, his foot got caught on the razor wire and he fell to the ground, hitting his head, Allison said. Dinger was still able to get to his feet and scale the second fence in spite of more razor wire on the second fence. Dinger suffered multiple cuts on his arms and legs during his escape.
He was seen by passing motorists taking off his shirt after he ran to the interstate. They called in sighting to the sheriff’s department, according to radio communications that day. Allison said the community reports led them to Boggy Branch Road. K-9 units were used to track Dinger to where he was hiding in a shed behind a residence.
Deputies found him lying under some camouflage clothing when they saw movement under the clothes. Allison said Dinger was back in custody sometime after 3 p.m.
The only clothing Dinger had on at the time of his capture were pants and socks, and he suffered scratches to his feet as well as the razor wire lacerations on his arms and legs.
After his capture, the department and Dinger went over his escape so changes could be made in security to avoid a future incident, Allison said. Dinger was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Dinger is being held in the jail for his alleged part in a March 12, home invasion and aggravated assault in Carriere. Dinger and a still unidentified second suspect broke into the home, allegedly shot a 16 year-old male in the face and tied up the victim’s 17 year-old brother with coaxial cable before taking money from the home. The shooting victim was transported by helicopter to Forrest General. He is reported to have survived the incident.
Dinger is the victim’s step-brother. After conversations with his family, Dinger turned himself in and was charged with aggravated assault and armed robbery.
Investigators are still working on identifying the second suspect in the shooting. Any information about the case can be directed to the sheriff’s department at 601-749-7700.
Allison said he appreciates the community tips that helped the department catch Dinger after his escape. He said he also appreciates the support of the Pearl River County Board of Supervisors for approving funding for the K-9 units that have proved useful in incidents such as this one
