Sheriff deals with burglaries and credit card fraud arrests

POPLARVILLE — Taking things that belong to others usually leads to the arrest of those suspected to be involved.

The conclusion of three cases two residential burglaries and a credit card fraud, brought about arrests by Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department.

The first residential burglary case involved two college students and a stolen surround sound system. Deputies got a report on Jan. 29, that a camp retreat on Swallow Ford Rd., Poplarville, had been broken into. Investigator James Buie said the grounds keeper of the camp retreat provided investigations with a tag number. The tag was researched by road deputies Sgt. Danny Slade and Deputy Ashley Lambert who determined the vehicle belonged to a student at Pearl River Community College who lived on campus.

Investigators went to question the suspect and found the missing DVD player and surround sound speakers in the dorm room of Brian Daniel Corderre, 18, who had a home address of 501 Rose Rd., New Hebron. A second suspect, Ryan Gaudet, 17, of 7 Chester Lee Cutoff Rd., Poplarville, was also found to have been involved in the residential burglary, Buie said.

Both suspects were charged with residential burglary, which is a felony, Buie said.

A second residential burglary involved stolen firearms and was solved with the help of a confidential informant. The burglary took place at a home located on Burge and Reyer Rd., in Poplarville on Jan. 31, where four rifles and a shotgun were taken, Buie said. A confidential informant notified the department that the stolen guns were sold. Buie said the information he gathered led him to establish Troy Anthony Torres, 29, of 54 American Way as a suspect.

Apparently Torres sold varying numbers of all five of the weapons to three separate people, who all contacted the Sheriff’s Department once they found out they were stolen. All the stolen firearms have been recovered, Buie said.

Torres is charged with residential burglary and two counts of trafficking firearms. He is currently being held without bond due to the seriousness of the charge, Buie said.

A forgotten credit card left at a local gas station in a separate incident was used to purchase more than $150 worth of online merchandise. The victim left the card at Keith’s Texaco in Carriere and an employee of the station, Jonathan Martin, 18, of 2 Pepper Mill Rd., Carriere, apparently took the card and used it to make the online purchases prior to the victim returning the next day to recover the card, Buie said.

Some of the items Martin purchased included video games and music downloads, Buie said. Martin was charged with credit card fraud.
