Former resident killed in hunting accident

PICAYUNE — Robert Lightsey, 55, of Laurel and a former resident of Picayune, was killed last Friday in a hunting accident near Heidelberg.

Lightsey was hunting on family land with his son Tyler when he was accidentally shot in the chest at around 10 a.m., according to a story in the Laurel Leader-Call. the accident is under investigation by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.

Lightsey was born in Belleville, Ill., and moved to Picayune as a child. His father, Johnnie Lightsey, managed the Mississippi Music store in Picayune and Lightsey worked for him, moving to Jackson in 1975. Robert Lightsey managed the Mississippi Music store there before moving to Laurel in 1982.

Lightsey established his own businesses in Laurel, Celfone Inc., SmarTel Communications, Premiere Sound and Music and Lifeline of Laurel, now known as LifeGuard Medical Alerts, Inc.

Services are at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at Highland Baptist Church in Laurel. Visitation is at 5 p.m. today at the church.

He is survived by four children, Tyler, Julie, Taylor and Caroline, all of Laurel; his wife Valerie Lightsey of Laurel; brother Kenneth Bryant Lightsey of Flower Mound, Texas; sister, Judi Lightsey McQueen of Laurel, and his parents, Johnnie and Doris Lightsey, of Laurel.

Bar fight ends in man being run over
A bar fight Friday morning resulted in one man being run over by the other with a pickup truck.
The fight was reported to Picayune Police officers Friday morning at about 1:44 at the American Legion Hall on Union School Road, said Capt. Chad Dorn.

Local gas prices continue a gradual upward trend

All Mr. Dithers wants to see occupied is Dagwood’s desk chair.
That is part of the adventures of Dagwood Bumstead, which includes a mention of the City of Picayune in Friday’s “Blondie” comic strip, which appears in the Picayune Item as a daily feature.
Picayune’s mention in Friday’s strip that also is released in other publications gives Picayune a name recognition boost worldwide, says the artist who draws the feature, Frank Cummings, a former Picayune resident and former employee of the Picayune Item.
