POPLARVILLE — A fatal accident on Mississippi Highway 53 and an accident involving a stalled truck on Poplarville railroad tracks both occurred Thursday night.
At about 8:50 p.m., 18 year-old Christina Robinson was driving her Mitsubishi Eclipse south on Miss. 53 when, for an unknown reason, it veered off the road and struck a tree, said Mississippi Highway Patrol Troop K Public Information Officer Sgt. Joe Gazzo.
Robinson, of 23765 Billy Green Road, Kiln, was taken to Memorial Hospital in Gulfport with minor injuries. Robinson’s passenger, Deanna Gambill, 24, also of 23765 Billy Green Road, Kiln, was killed in the accident, Gazzo said.
Gazzo said blood tests are pending.
In an unrelated incident, the Poplarville Fire Department was called out at about 9 p.m. to the rail road crossing on E. North Street for a train versus vehicle accident. Poplarville Fire Chief Kris Foster said apparently a white GMC pickup truck driven by James Banley, of Gulfport, was attempting to cross the tracks when the truck stalled. The driver saw the train coming and abandoned the vehicle, which was hit by the train at about 20 miles per hour, Foster said.
A trailer was attached to the rear of the truck carrying a four wheeler, which was ejected from the trailer, Foster said. The truck was totaled in the accident, but the train received no damage.
Two hours of clean up time later the train was moving again. No injuries were reported in the incident, Foster said.
