JACKSON, Miss. — One of three Madison County deputies wounded during a shootout remained hospitalized Saturday.
Tena McKenzie, a spokeswoman for the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, said Deputy Taylor Chastain remained in serious condition. Chastain had undergone surgery Friday.
McKenzie said Deputies Thomas Luby and Stanley Fisher — who suffered less serious wounds in the shootout — were released from the hospital late Friday.
Madison County Sheriff Toby Trowbridge said Roosevelt “Bo” Wilson, 79, was shot to death by lawmen after keeping officers at bay for six hours outside his home along U.S. 51 in the Pickens area. The three deputies were wounded after they were sent in to get out other lawmen who had been pinned down by gunshots from Wilson.
Trowbridge said when the other officers came in, Wilson walked out of the house and begin shooting. He said Wilson was shot to death in the exchange of gunfire.
Trowbridge said Wilson was wanted for the shooting death earlier Friday of Billy McMullen, 63, who had leased farming land from Wilson for many years. McMullen died at a hospital in Canton shortly after the shooting.
Trowbridge says he doesn’t know why the initial shooting took place. He said he would have more answers after crime scene experts finish their investigation.

Picayune featured in “Blondie” comic strip
Occupy Picayune?
All Mr. Dithers wants to see occupied is Dagwood’s desk chair.
That is part of the adventures of Dagwood Bumstead, which includes a mention of the City of Picayune in Friday’s “Blondie” comic strip, which appears in the Picayune Item as a daily feature.
Picayune’s mention in Friday’s strip that also is released in other publications gives Picayune a name recognition boost worldwide, says the artist who draws the feature, Frank Cummings, a former Picayune resident and former employee of the Picayune Item. - More Local News Headlines
