A man who was arrested last week on the charges of attempting to send a controlled substance through the mail and for possessing cocaine and stolen items now an faces additional charge for possessing stolen property.
Also, in a traffic stop two men were found to be in possession of what tests show was crack cocaine.
Picayune Police Assistant to the Chief of Police Jeremy Magri said 27-year-old William Shane Anderson of 42 East St., now faces an additional charge of possession of stolen property after another search of his home, this time by the Picayune Police Department, found more stolen property, this time allegedly taken from a Metairie, La. resident. He had been arrested earlier on several charges, including possession of stolen property, by the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department on March 5.
A number of items were found during a search of Anderson’s home on March 5, after he was arrested for allegedly attempting to send 40 Opana pills through the mail in a hollowed out bar of soap, according to information received from the sheriff’s department and reported in the Picayune Item. That arrest of Anderson was made by the sheriff’s department after it received a complaint from a local business, leading him to be charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.
Investigation into the complaint by the sheriff’s department that led to Anderson’s arrest prompted a search of his home, according to information from the sheriff’s department and reported in a previous story in the Picayune Item. The search found a number of stolen firearms, crack cocaine and items commonly used in the resale of narcotics, as related by the sheriff’s department in the earlier story. Anderson and several others at the home during the search were charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and four counts of possession of stolen firearms by the Sheriff’s Department, the story stated.
Magri said the stolen firearms were turned over to the police department because they were recorded by the department. Investigators with the police department then conducted a search of their own on March 6, finding a passport, exercise equipment, a plasma television and a number of electronic items that did not belong to Anderson or to the other people who lived at the home, Magri said.
Investigation into the origin of those items determined they had been stolen from a resident in Metarie, of whom Anderson was an acquaintance, leading Anderson to be charged with another count of possession of stolen property, Magri said.
In the case resulting from a traffic stop, on March 7, an officer on patrol observed a vehicle traveling east on Rosa Street with one working headlight and no tag light, prompting the stop, Magri said. During the stop the officer came into contact with the driver, 49-year-old McDonald Nixon of 2320 Cousin St., and his passenger 37-year-old Clifton Peters of 808 Herrin Dr., Magri said.
The officer detected the odor of an intoxicating beverage during the stop, leading the officer to request the occupants get out of the vehicle, Magri said. Consent to search the vehicle was granted, Magri said, and the officer found several bottles of liquor, to which Peters claimed ownership, and a rock-like substance believed to be crack cocaine on the floorboard of the extended cab area of the pickup truck. Neither person claimed ownership of the rock-like substance, Magri said.
The substance was tested and determined to be crack cocaine, leading both Peters and Nixon to be charged with possession of a controlled substance, Magri said. Peters was cited for possession of bonded whiskey as well, and $449 in cash found in Nixon’s pocket was seized, Magri said.
