Reports by community members of what was thought to be drug activity brought Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department narcotics detectives to the homes of two suspected methamphetamine manufacturers.
Maj. Donnie Saucier said the first case began as a community tip of possible drug activity at the home of 69-year-old Leroy Leeks at 7373 U.S. 11 North, Carriere. Saucier said deputies went to the home and spoke with Leeks on Tuesday. Saucier said while they spoke with Leeks, they could see what they believed to be marijuana in plain sight and what they thought was a methamphetamine lab on the living room table, prompting them to call narcotics detectives to the scene.
Saucier said the detectives arrived and requested and obtained consent to search the home, where they found marijuana and three methamphetamine cooks, along with several precursor chemicals and equipment used in the production of the drug.
Leeks was charged with manufacturing a controlled substance, possession of precursor chemicals, generating hazardous waste in the manufacture of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana, Saucier said. The Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics was called in to dispose of the labs, he said.
On Thursday, narcotics detectives responded to a number of complaints that 33-year-old Norman K. Peoples of 2401 E. Canal St., Apt. C., was making methamphetamine at several locations in the county, Saucier said.
Detectives went to his home, and after Peoples opened the door, the detectives could see what they believed to be a bag of crack cocaine and a bag of a substance believed to be methamphetamine lying on the floor, Saucier said. When the detectives requested consent to search, Peoples declined, prompting the detectives to secure a search warrant, Saucier said.
In the search, the detectives found crack and methamphetamine along with a duffle bag containing a large methamphetamine cook, Saucier said. Also found in the search were several precursor chemicals and equipment used to make methamphetamine, Saucier said.
Peoples was charged with manufacture of a controlled substance, possession of precursor chemicals, generating hazardous waste in the manufacture of a controlled substance and two counts of felony possession of a controlled substance for crack and methamphetamine, Saucier said.
Again, MBN was called in to dispose of the methamphetamine lab, Saucier said.
