Century plant blooms

PICAYUNE — This Agave Americana, commonly referred to as a century plant because they are bloom only once ina 100 years, is currently flowering adjacent to the Carriere Post Office. The plants typically live 10 to 30 years and bloom only once in their lifetime, signifying they are about to die. After dying off the plant is reborn by producing adventitious shoots at the base.
