Avoiding the new barrier is to risk being ticketed

PICAYUNE — Drivers attempting to avoid the physical barrier recently placed on U.S. Highway 11 by driving through business parking lots near Richardson Ozona Road will get a ticket.

After the Mississippi Department of Transportation installed the barriers near the intersection of the two roads, cars began to attempt to circumvent them by driving through the K&T Texaco parking lot, posing a hazard to pedestrians using the business.

A release from the Picayune Police Department states the act will earn the driver a citation, if caught. Officers have begun to set up traffic posts near the business to catch drivers who conduct the dangerous move and are issuing tickets for violators. The charge is entering private property to avoid a traffic control device.

Not only does the violation cause safety hazards for pedestrians and patrons of the gas station, but it interferes with the store’s business, the release states.

Drivers northbound on U.S. Hwy. 11 who want to access Richardson Ozona Road should use Hayden Oaks Drive, where Super Soaker car wash is located, thus avoiding being issued a ticket. Hayden Oaks Drive is only a few blocks north of Richardson Ozona Road.
