WIGGINS — Stone County sheriff’s deputies say only a handful of the 42 people arrested at a cockfight last weekend have paid fines to collect their belongings.
They did include owners of most of the surviving gamecocks.
Chief Deputy Phillis Olds that, by Friday, owners had recovered 18 of the 24 live roosters confiscated last Sunday. Stone says the remaining six probably will be taken to a private refuge.
Deputy Adam Guidry said betters and bird owners were getting ready to barbecue two dozen roosters killed in the fights when deputies showed up, acting on a tip.
Deputies also confiscated metal spikes and blades attached to the roosters’ legs, carriers, steroids, and a drug used to make the birds fight harder.
