PICAYUNE —
All the homes Hurricane Issac flooded in Pearl River County will have many residents putting damaged property and other debris by the side of the road.
While many homeowners have already begun the process of removing water-damaged furniture and appliances from flood-damaged homes, Picayune officials and FEMA ask that those items be separated and kept from blocking roads and public infrastructure such as telephone poles, water hydrants and utility meters.
Debris should be separated into six categories, including white goods (refrigerators, washers, dryers, freezers); construction debris (gypsum wallboard such as Sheetrock, lumber, carpet, furniture and plumbing); green debris (limbs, trees or any other vegetative matter); hazardous waste (motor oil, batteries, pesticides, paint and cleaning supplies); household garbage (food, paper, packaging), and electronics (computers, DVD players, televisions and stereo equipment).
Debris should be on the curb and away from drainage features and not blocking the roadway. Placing debris under a tree or near such infrastructure as hydrants and meters will hinder the cleanup process.
According to a release from the city of Picayune, pro-active measures will be employed to counteract a predicted boom in the mosquito population. Typically one truck tours one of four sections of the city on one of four days a week. That means each section is sprayed once a week. Public Works Director Eric Morris said that schedule will be ramped up to two trucks each touring a section each night, leading to each section of the city being sprayed twice a week.
In addition, larvicide will be added to ditches, storm inlets, and areas of standing water to reduce the mosquito population.
The Mississippi State Department of Health reports only one case of West Nile Virus, a mosquito borne illness, in Pearl River County so far this year. Statewide there have been 114 cases in Mississippi this year.
Normal household trash collection is expected to resume this week, the release states.
City gas crews are working in Westchester subdivision to identify how many gas meters were damaged during the flood. Meters will be replaced as needed, but will not be turned on if the home had appliances that were damaged by floodwaters. To have service restored, the homeowner will need to provide an authorization form from a licensed plumber stating appliances in the home are safe for operation.
If flooding did not occur at a home currently without gas service, those residents are asked to call 311 to report that situation, the release states.
Additional updates are available by calling 311, by calling city hall at 601-798-9770, or by visiting the city’s Facebook page.
