PICAYUNE —
Three suspects were arrested for their part in a drug transaction that was reported to Picayune police officers by a concerned citizen.
The case appeared to involve a visible drug transaction that occurred in the driveway of a home on Stemwood Drive, said Capt. Chad Dorn.
Dorn said on July 21, officers were alerted to the possible drug transaction at about 10:21 a.m. in the driveway of 1229 Stemwood Dr. Responding officers saw the blue Mercury Marquis described as being at the scene of the crime running a stop sign at the intersection of Highland Drive and Stemwood Drive, the police captain said.
Officers stopped the vehicle, which was being driven by 32-year-old Candace Nacole Harry of 227 S. Abrams Ave.. The officer asked to see her proof of insurance, and when she opened her glove box to retrieve it, the officer could see two pill bottles in the storage compartment, Dorn said.
Further investigation into the presence of the bottles showed that one of the bottles, labeled for a prescription of Hydrocodone, was in Harry’s name, Dorn said. The other had no prescription label, but contained the same kind of controlled substance, Dorn said. Both Harry and her passenger were asked to get out of the vehicle, and officers saw $45 in cash close to where the passenger was sitting, Dorn said.
Harry’s passenger, 61-year-old Dianne Delores Cooper of 1223 Kingsway Dr., claimed ownership of the second bottle, Dorn said.
Harry was charged with conspiracy to sell a controlled substance, with sale of a controlled substance and with running a stop sign, Dorn said. Cooper was charged with conspiracy to sell a controlled substance, sale of a controlled substance and on an outstanding contempt of court warrant, Dorn said.
Officers then spoke with the complainant who reported the transaction and based on that person’s statement and evidence collected in the stop, a search warrant was obtained for 1229 Stemwood, the home of 57-year-old James Curtis Simmons, Dorn said.
Officers found a pill bottle during the search that contained four and half Hydrocodone pills similar to those found on Cooper and Harry, Dorn said. Simmons, who is a convicted felon, also had a 12 gauge shotgun, a .270 caliber rifle, a .38 caliber revolver, a .357 caliber pistol and a bulletproof vest in the home. Officers also found a bong, or water pipe, and a glass pipe used to consume narcotics, Dorn said.
Simmons was charged with conspiracy to sell a controlled substance, possession of paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Dorn said.
