POPLARVILLE — The honors for Hornet track star and scholar Jordan Travis keep rolling in. The three-time cross-country state champion was honored by the board of aldermen on Tuesday night with a resolution by the board, presented to him by Mayor Billy Spiers. Travis' family and friends attended. Besides being a super athletic, Travis maintains a perfect 4.0 grade point average, helps tutor and mentor younger children and is active in his church. He was named the Gatorade Mississippi Boys Cross Country Runner of the year for 2011-12, and is the first student from Poplarville to receive that award. He was honored previously by the Poplarville school board. City Clerk Jodi Stuart read the framed resolution before Spiers presented it to Travis. "I hope one day to see you in the Olympics," said Spiers as he handed Travis the award and shook the athlete's hand. Several of the aldermen asked Travis to say something. "Speech," said one. Travis, who is soft-spoken and terse, stood before the board, took a deep breath and said, "Thank you!" Everyone laughed. Afterward a Travis family member quipped to the aldermen, "He lets his feet do the talking." Travis' accomplishments are remarkable. "He is a great role model for other kids to emulate," said one board member. The Gatorade Co., in conjunction with ESPN sports, in its selection process recognized Travis' "outstanding athletic excellence" and his "high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character, demonstrated on and off the racecourse. . ." The board of aldermen's resolution pointed out that Travis is "Mississippi's best high school boys cross-country runner. . ." The resolution also made note of Travis' perfect grade-point average, his work as a peer tutor, his activities in Beta Phi, his volunteer work at his church, and his work in a campaign to deliver Christmas cards to the incarcerated. Said the resolution: "Now, therefore, be it resolved by the mayor and board of Aldermen of the City of Poplarville, Miss., in regular meeting duly assembled on this 17th day of April, 2012, that we do hereby extend our congratulations to Poplarville High School senior Jordan Travis, Gatorade Mississippi Boys Cross-country Runner of the year for 2011-12. . ."
