PICAYUNE —
Work to provide Hide-A-Way Lake with sewer service is nearing completion and several other projects are underway in other areas served by the Pearl River County Utility Authority.
Executive Director Jeff McClain said the board discussed a number of projects underway during Thursday’s board meeting.
Work to connect nearly 900 homes in the HAWL subdivision is nearing completion. McClain said so far about 500 customers are connected to the system, which includes the 350 homes on the east side of the lake whose owners signed up. He expects by the end of July that all of the about 500 homes along the west side of the lake whose owners signed up will be connected. He expects about 875 homes in the gated community to be connected to the waste water system when the project is complete.
Waste water collected from the system will be routed to Picayune’s state-of-the-art waste water treatment facility on Neal Road.
McClain said that during the meeting, the board was updated on the outcome of the Health Department’s inspection of the Utility Authority’s three wells in Picayune, Poplarville and Hillsdale. On a scale of 1 to 5, with five being the best, the Hillsdale well received a rating of 4.3. Picayune and Poplarville’s wells received scores of 4.7 each. The Health Department rates the wells on three categories: technical, financial and managerial, then averages the three scores, McClain said.
“We were pleased with the results,” McClain said.
Work also is slated for the former Dixie Utilities area. McClain said water lines are set to be installed in the areas of Westchester and Timberlane that were not installed in the first phase of work. Water lines were installed in those areas during previous projects, but there were some side streets left out. Adding the additional lines will eliminate dead ends and provide a more even flow of water. Eagle Heights will be included in the upcoming round of water line installation. McClain expects bids for the work to be opened next month and work to begin in August.
Eight to 10 more customers along Liberty Road also will be added to that water system.
Four lift stations in Picayune also are on the Utility Authority’s list of projects. Those lift stations will get pump replacements, electrical panel upgrades and the addition of Supervisor Control and Data Acquisition technology. SCADA allows the Utility Authority to receive instant notification when a system problem occurs, McClain said.
Two lift stations in Poplarville also will receive the new pumps, electrical panels and SCADA improvements.
In the Hillsdale area, 30 more customers will be added to the water system.
Tommy Breeland was named the new board president following the resignation of former board president Steve Lawler, and Ike Lewis was named the new vice president, McClain said. McClain said Lawler was a Board of Supervisors appointee, and there has been no word on when a replacement will be named.
The next regular meeting of the Utility Authority board will be Thursday, July 19 at the Poplarville city hall.
