PEARL RIVER COUNTY —
Trusties in Pearl River County litter crews picked up more trash than litter crews in the 13 other counties within the State Transportation Commission’s Southern District.
Southern District Commissioner Tom King presented the award to the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department, which uses state and federal trusties to form litter crews that pick up trash along major roadways.
King said this county’s litter crews picked up 16,459 bags of trash from July of 2011 to the present, the most in the 14 county district of Southern Mississippi.
“You don’t know whether to be proud of this or disappointed,” Sheriff David Allison said.
Allison said he employs three crews that consist of corrections officers and three to four trusties per crew. King said the Sheriff’s Department is reimbursed by the Commission for manpower to guard the crews and for fuel expenses.
The use of the corrections officers and trusties could be considered a waste of tax dollars, Allison said. Instead of picking up trash those county employees and trusties could be working in other areas of the county, the Sheriff said.
Instead of chucking trash out of car windows or depositing it in the back of a pickup truck, which only ends with the trash on the side of the road when wind carries it out of the pickup truck bed, Allison asks county residents to be more vigilant by putting trash where it belongs, in a trash can. He suggests motorists could keep a trash bag in their vehicle for waste, and deposit that bag in a trash can at a gas station either while fueling up or at home.
Litter crews currently work five days a week 8 hours a day to keep trash off the major and county roads, Allison said.
