Great American Clean-up this Saturday

PICAYUNE — Ready to clean up the city? If that’s the case, The Great American Cleanup will give Picayune residents their chance.

The Great American Cleanup will take place this Saturday, rain or shine, beginning at 9 a.m. at city hall on Beech Street.

Picayune Grounds and Beautification Superintendent Daryl Smith said the event is an effort to cleanup neighborhoods and other areas in and around Picayune. Residents are encouraged to come out and participate. After the kickoff in front of city hall, teams can head out into to areas of the community of their choosing to participate. Garbage bags will be provided for the event, however since the tools used to pick up trash failed to come back in previous events, those tools will not be offered by the city.

Smith said that Sheriff David Allison has dedicated a team of trustees to help with the cleanup effort.

Coastal Waste will donate the use of several dumpsters and will position them at key areas of the city so residents can dispose of the collected trash. Dumpsters will be located at the Fire Station on Adcox Road, East Canal Park, Charlotte Drive, Ben Taylor Park on Neal Road, the intersection of Telly Road and Alpine Road, Rosa Street Park, the median between Kingsway Drive and Whitthauer Drive and the intersection of Norwood Avenue and Third Avenue. Trailers will be placed on Cooper Rd., and Mitchell Street.

For those looking to help clean the air, cherrybark oak saplings will be available at city hall during the event for free while supplies last. Smith said the saplings were donated by the Mississippi Municipal League.
