Former police chief’s wife dies of breast cancer

SLIDELL, La. — Cecelia Drennan, wife of Slidell, La., Mayor Freddy Drennan who is also a former Picayune police chief, succumbed to her battle with breast cancer Monday morning.

Drennan is described as someone who had a heart for her community. As well as achieving success as a real estate agent in both St. Tammany Parish, La., and in Pearl River County as a Realtor-broker, she had served with several civic groups in Slidell and in Picayune. She was president of the Slidell Lioness Club. She was a member and officer in the Slidell Republican Women’s Club, Slidell Women’s Civic Club, Beta Sigma Phi sorority’s Xi Gamma Lamda chapter; the Picayune, Miss., Civic Women’s Club; the Rotary Club of Slidell-Inner Wheel, and the Tanglewood Village Homeowners Association. She was certified as a Master Gardener by the LSU Ag Center in 2009.

Through the Slidell Republican Women’s Club, she developed the Pearl Williams Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is named in honor of the late, longtime city councilwoman, and benefits outstanding Slidell high school students. Drennan served as chairwoman of the directorial committee from 2008 to 2011.

The Slidell Olde Towne Merchant’s Association selected her as queen of its St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 2011. In February, the Krewe of Slidellians recognized her lifetime of serving the community by crowning her Queen Samaritan LXII.

A statement published on the Slidell city government’s Facebook page read, “Mrs. Cecelia (Drennan) gave so much to this community, and her spirit will live on in the many organizations with which she was involved and the many individuals whose lives were touched by her efforts.”

“(Mrs. Drennan) was friendly, lovely, caring and supportive,” said Gloria Bell, who knew her through the Lioness Club. “We’ve really lost a leader.”

Married to Mayor Drennan for 40 years, she was the mother of two sons: Frederick Douglas Drennan II and Deric Adrian Drennan. She also is survived by five grandchildren and her mother, Elsa Glydewell Lee of Picayune.

A funeral service was held Thursday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Slidell with burial at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
