Science camp now taking applications

PICAYUNE — Kids who might be interested in learning about science and technology should apply to this year’s Science and Engineering Exploration camp.

This will be the second year for the camp to be held in the Picayune area, and this year the focus will be on air and the weather, said Maureen Pollitz.

The camp will be held from June 25 to June 28, the hours are from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Applications for the camp can be picked up at the Picayune School District office on Goodyear Boulevard next to the district auditorium. Children in 4th to 9th grade from a school district in the county can apply.

There are places for 50 children to participate in the camp, and the cost is $25 to attend the four-day learning experience. That cost covers a T-shirt and snacks. Pollitz said lunches will be provided by the Picayune School District’s Summer Feeding program. Nicholson Elementary will host the camp again this year and Team CHAOS members will help with the camp and the projects. The camp was so successful last year that Pollitz said she decided to hold it again this year.

The camp is designed to prompt students to take an interest in science, technology, engineering and math, and is partially funded by a NASA grant called the Summer of Innovation, Pollitz said.

This year participants will be learning about weather and how to gauge and predict weather. Pollitz said youngsters in the camp will create a number of science based items, such as how to make and use a weather station, and possibly take field trips to agencies that observe and predict the weather, such as a Naval Oceanographic Office. Pollitz said she in the process of contacting two such offices within the area, such as those at Stennis and in Slidell, La. She also plans to have a meteorologist come speak to the children.

Participants also will get to make their own hot air balloon.

“They don’t often get to create their own hot air balloon,” Pollitz said.

After participants complete construction of their weather station, which will include a rain gauge, weather vane and anemometer, they will compare their creation to a weather station sold at any store. Weather observations made with the students’ creations will be entered on a website where the participants can monitor the weather patterns they have observed and then use that information to make their own weather predictions.

“I’m excited about it,” Pollitz said.

Solar power also will be explored during the camp, including construction of a model solar powered car.

While there is a fee to attend the camp, Pollitz said she has some sponsors who would be willing to help a qualified child attend. Anyone willing to help sponsor a child to attend the camp can contact Pollitz at pollitzd@bellsouth.net.

Applications will continue to be accepted until all the spaces are filled.
