PICAYUNE — An accident early Sunday morning led to the death of a Hammond, La., woman and the arrest of a Picayune woman.

According to a release from Troop L of the Louisiana State Police, the accident occurred at about 1 a.m. Sunday in the northbound lanes of Interstate 59 about a half mile south of the Louisiana Highway 1090/U.S. Highway 11 Pearl River exit in St. Tammany Parish.

Arrested and charged with vehicular homicide and reckless driving is 51-year-old Carol Henley of Picayune.

At the time of the accident Henley entered the Interstate onto the north bound lanes, but was traveling south. Henley’s 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck then collided head-on with a 2002 Nissan SUV driven by 42-year-old Brenna Barnes of Hammond, La.

Barnes succumbed to the fatal injuries at LSU Medical Center in New Orleans, the release states.

Henley was also transported to the medical center with moderate injuries and is believed to have been impaired at the time of the accident, the release states. Toxicology tests are being conducted. The release states when Henley is released from the hospital she will be booked into the St. Tammany Parish jail on the charges of vehicular homicide and reckless driving.

Stopping impaired drivers is an effort not only by law enforcement, but the public as well, the Lousiana State Police release says. The release states impaired drivers should never be allowed to get behind the wheel, and any dangerous drivers should be reported to local law enforcement. These actions can give the public an important role to play in reducing the number of impaired driver related crashes, according to the release.
