PICAYUNE —
Picayune Police officers were involved in a car chase and a foot chase Friday after they responded to a call about a woman attempting to pass a fraudulent check at Wal-Mart.
At about 4:23 Friday afternoon officers were dispatched to the store about the check, said Picayune Capt. Chad Dorn. When officers arrived, they spoke with store management and the female suspect who was being held on scene, and identified as 24-year-old Tanesha Donaldson of 37178 West Pinehill Dr.
Donaldson told the officers that she was given the check by her friend for some house cleaning work she had done, the police captain said. Dorn said Donaldson told the officers that her friend was waiting outside the store in a vehicle.
Officers checked into the status of the check and confirmed that it was fraudulent, Dorn said. Donaldson then was charged with felony false pretenses, the police captain said.
Officers then attempted to locate Donaldson’s friend, whom they found waiting in the parking lot in a silver Lincoln Towncar, Dorn said.
Dorn said officers attempted to make contact with the driver, later identified as 39-year-old Kevin Pierce of Slidell, La., asking him to get out of the vehicle. However, he put the car in reverse and backed out in an aggressive manner, with the Picayune officer still holding onto the driver’s side door, Dorn said.
Even after the officer advised Pierce several times that he was under arrest, he put the car in drive and left the parking lot at a high rate of speed, Dorn said. Officers gave chase in their patrol vehicles, and saw Pierce head east onto Mississippi 43 South, but the officers lost sight of him, the police captain said. The Lincoln Towncar was later located abandoned behind a business off of the highway where witnesses told the officers that they saw the suspect run into the woods, Dorn said.
After officers set up a perimeter, the suspect was seen running west on Miss. 43 South, and after a brief foot chase, Pierce was taken into custody, the police captain said. Dorn said initially the suspect provided false identifying information to officers. However, the car was registered in Slidell, La., and that combined with other information gathered in the course of the investigation prompted the officers to contact the Slidell Police Department, Dorn said.
Slidell police identified the man as Pierce and provided his address of 12202 Carole Rd., Slidell, Dorn said. The Slidell Police Department also advised Picayune officers that Pierce was wanted by that department on a bank fraud warrant, Dorn said.
The Picayune officers obtained a warrant to conduct a search of Pierce’s vehicle, where investigators found a small plastic bag containing marijuana, three-fourths of an as yet unidentified yellow pill and a bottle of whiskey, Dorn said. Pierce was charged with felony false pretense, felony evasion, possession of marijuana in a motor vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, possession of bonded whiskey, three counts of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, Dorn said.
