School Superintendent Alan Lumpkin in September implemented an energy savings contest between Pearl River Central’s five schools, and he told the Pearl River County school board on Monday that final tabulations show the contest saved the school $67,000 on the overall electric bill.
The five schools participating in the contest were the upper and lower elementaries on the McNeill campus, the middle and high schools on the Carriere campus, and the alternative school on the Burgetown campus. Pearl River Central has three major campuses.
The upper and lower elementaries tied for the biggest savers, said Lumpkin, and they will split an $8,000 prize given to the winning schools. Melissa Holston is principal of the Upper Elementary and Dr. Sharon Guepet principal at the Lower Elementary.
The net savings to the school system, after awarding the prize, is $59,000 for the 2011-12 school year, said Lumpkin.
In another contest for highest attendance, Dr. Lori Burkett, principal of the aalternative school at Burgetown, won the overall competition for the year in the highest attendance category.
In other business, the board awarded 16th section land hunting and fishing leases: On 16-5-17, or 642 acres, Ronnie Lindsey’s high bid of $10 per acre won, on 16-5-16 Larry Saucier won with a $11.52 per acre bid, and on 16-4-16 Thomas Kirby won with a $5.75 per acre bid. The board takes the highest bid for 16th section leases.
Lumpkin also recapped the year, and told the board that “we have had a great school year.”
Board president Jeff Jones was absent and vice chairman Jeremy Weir chaired the 30-minute meeting held in the high school cafeteria.
In other matters, the board:
— Approved minutes of the May 7 regular session, the May 14 workshop session and the May 14 recess session.
— Approved the salary scales.
— Named Southern Bancorp as the district depository for the next three years.
— Approved personnel recommendations: Angela Tynes, Kindergarten assistant teacher; Rhona Hayes, Middle school instructional coach; Jerica Luxich, first grade teacher; Marsha Moore, first grade teacher; Rachel Harris, Middle school counselor; Brandy English, first grade teacher assistant; Cynthia Hilton, Lower Elementary receptionist; Karissa Baudoin, Middle school math teacher; Katie Johnson, second grade teacher; Lori LaJaunie, special ed teacher; Kimberly Johnson, financial secretary; Jennifer Spence, high school Allied Health position; Lauren Baker, Middle school 7th grade language; Heather Cowant Burleson, high school math teacher; Diane Massaro, Middle school special ed teacher; Kimberly Sauls, alternative education social worker; and Jaqueline Dyle, 7th grade reading teacher.
— Approved the 2012-13 GED program.
— Approved school bus turnarounds for the 2012-2013 school year.
— Went into an executive session to discuss personnel.
— Adjourned to July 2.
