PICAYUNE —
School is back in session, and careful driving by motorists is key to ensuring the safety of children heading to class either by foot or by bus.
Classes have resumed today for the Picayune and Poplarville school districts and began on Monday for the Pearl River County School District. The police department has issued a release containing several safety tips for drivers and children as the students enter this year of school.
Picayune police officers have started to implement high visibility traffic enforcement at all school zones and all traffic violations, including speeding, following buses too closely and ignoring a bus’s lights, will be strictly enforced. Radar trailers will be set up in various school zones to remind motorists they have entered such an area. School zone speed limits of 20 miles per hour from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. are in effect Monday through Friday while school is in session. Motor vehicles traveling on four-lane roads in the city are required to stop when a bus stops, even if they are in the opposite lane of traffic.
“The safety of our children is our top priority,” said Chief Bryan Dawsey in the release.
Children waiting for the bus should avoid playing in the street and when the bus arrives, they should line up facing the bus rather along side it. Loose belongings are best stowed in a backpack and if items are lost under a bus, children should not reach under the bus to retrieve them since the bus driver may be unable to see the child.
When getting off of a bus children should head straight for the sidewalk, or as far from the side of the road as possible as quickly as possible if there is no sidewalk. Children who must cross the street after getting off the bus should do so from the front of the bus to ensure the driver sees them, according to the release.
Students who walk or ride a bicycle to school should do so in groups of two or more and obey traffic signs. Traffic signals and crossing guards are a student’s friend, children should always pay attention to them. When riding a bicycle children should wear a helmet and avoid wearing loose clothing, which can get caught in spokes and pedals. Wearing reflective clothing will make bicycle riders more visible to motorists, the release states.

Who’s ready for The Big One on New Madrid fault?
It’s a bleak scenario. A massive earthquake along the New Madrid fault kills or injures 60,000 people in Tennessee. A quarter of a million people are homeless. The Memphis airport — the country’s biggest air terminal for packages — goes off-line. Major oil and gas pipelines across Tennessee rupture, causing shortages in the Northeast. In Missouri, another 15,000 people are hurt or dead. Cities and towns throughout the central United States lose power and water for months. Losses stack up to hundreds of billions of dollars.
