PICAYUNE —
Fourth District Congressman U.S. Rep. Steven Palazzo (R-Biloxi) will host a town hall meeting here on Tuesday at Magnolia Columns, 217 South Curran Avenue. It will be what Palazzo aides call a “brown bag lunchtime town hall.”
Doors open at 11:45 a.m. and questioning and discussions begin at noon, Palazzo spokesperson Laura Chambers said.
Palazzo is fresh off another town hall appearance last week at Gautier, where local constituents quizzed the first-term congressman on topics ranging from mass transit, tobacco and Social Security policies to the looming huge federal budget deficits and congressional spending.
Palazzo had recently been criticized by some constituents for not holding town hall meetings, but Palazzo told the press at the Gautier meeting that the current series of town hall meetings had been planned long before any criticism cropped up.
Besides Picayune’s town hall on Tuesday, Palazzo has others scheduled for Harrison County on Aug. 10, Jones County on Aug. 13 and Lamar-Forrest counties on Aug. 14.
Incumbent Republican Palazzo faces his first re-election bid on Nov. 6, as he squares off with former GOP gubernatorial candidate Ron Williams, a Pascagoula businessman; Democrat Michael Harrington, a Hattiesburg businessman; and Reform candidate Robert W. Claunch of Diamondhead. Williams is running as a Libertarian candidate in the Nov. 6 balloting.
Palazzo told about 60 Gautier residents that he was trying to rein in spending, cut the deficit and cut redtape for small businesses, which they face from the federal government. He also said that he is trying to forestall drastic cuts to the U.S. defense budget. He said almost three-quarters of a trillion dollars planned in defense cuts would cripple the local and U.S. economies plus put in danger U.S. interests around the world.
The only other congressional candidate who has campaigned in Picayune so far is Williams, who spoke to Pearl River Patriots recently. He said then he plans to campaign in Picayune again. “I am the only true conservative and Libertarian candidate in the race,” Williams said.
