PICAYUNE —
A storage unit used to hold supplies used by the Picayune Police Department was recently found to have been burglarized.
Community Policing officer Capt. Theresa Milar said she noticed the theft on March 14, when she went to add a few things to the storage unit, finding the lock had been cut.
Inspection of the storage unit at Southern Mini Storage on U.S. Highway 11, found that several items were missing, but one item was left by the perpetrators, an old washing machine, Milar said.
The unit was being used to store items used by the children who participate in the annual Picayune Summer Camp. Items take were those such as fishing poles, rods and reels, five blue plastic totes with Christmas decorations, four plastic totes with various summer camp supplies and two coolers with blue and white lids that may have Picayune Police Summer Camp markings.
“Our summer camps are coming up and we’re going to have to replace what was stolen so our kids can have summer camp,” Deputy Chief Bryan Dawsey said.
Milar said ten of the fishing poles stolen from the unit were still in their original wrapping, and while they had no reels, they were retractable. Three of the six rods and reels taken were pink in color. All of the items taken were donations to the department as part of the summer camp program, Milar said.
The last time Milar said she went to the storage unit was on Dec. 16, so the crime occurred between December and March.
The Picayune Police Department asks any one with knowledge of who may have committed the crime to call CrimeStoppers at 601-799-CLUE (2583). Information that leads to an arrest is eligible for a reward.
