PICAYUNE —
An accident that occurred Tuesday night led to DUI charges being pressed against a driver, while the driver and two-year-old passenger of the second vehicle had to be taken to the local hospital.
Mississippi Highway Patrol Trooper 1st Class Roy Jacobsen said the department received the call about the accident, which occurred on U.S. Highway 11 just north of the Willow Bend Trailer park, at about 6 p.m.
Emergency personnel arrived to find the driver of a north bound 2001 Grand Marquis, 43-year-old Dealphanzo L. Smith of Picayune, had hit a guardrail before leaving his lane of travel and going into the south bound lane, Jacobsen said. Smith’s vehicle then struck, head-on, a south bound 2004 Honda CRV driven by 25-year-old Bryan Keith Burgess Jr., of Georgia, Jacobsen said.
Burgess suffered injuries in the crash and was taken to Highland Community Hospital for treatment and is said to be in stable condition, Jacobsen. The two-year-old child with Burgess was secured in a car seat and suffered only minor injuries, Jacobsen said.
Smith was determined by troopers on scene to be under the influence and was charged with DUI involving serious injury, Jacobsen said.
