PEARL RIVER COUNTY —
Unemployment in Pearl River County has increased nearly two percentage points between the months of November and December.
According to information released by the Mississippi Department of Employment Security, Pearl River County’s unemployment rate for the month of December was 9.6 percent, an increase from November’s rate of 7.7 percent. A year ago in December the rate was 10.4 percent.
Statewide, Mississippi’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 8.6 percent in December, a slight increase from November’s rate of 8.5 percent, the release states. In December of 2011 the rate was 10.4 percent.
Nationwide the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for December was 7.8 percent, which was the same rate reported for the month of November. In December of 2011 the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 8.5 percent.
Seasonally adjusted rates take into consideration patterns such as weather, holidays, school schedules and other regularly occurring events that contribute to employment rates. Only nationwide and statewide percentages are adjusted.
Unadjusted unemployment rates in Mississippi show the unemployment rate was 9.1 percent for the month of December. In November, the unadjusted unemployment rate was 7.5 percent. In December of 2011 that same rate was 9.9 percent.
The nationwide unadjusted unemployment rate in December was 7.6 percent. The same rate in November was 7.4 percent. Those figures reflect a decrease from December’s 2011 rate of 8.3 percent.
During the month of December, 24 counties in Mississippi reported rates less than the state average of 9.1 percent, including DeSoto and Rankin counties rate of 5.9 percent. Madison County reported an unemployment rate of 6.7 percent.
Clay and Holmes Counties reported rates of 18.4 percent and 16.3 percent respectively, the release states.

BLAST SITE
An elevator well exploded Thursday evening at QUIKRETE® cement and concrete plant, located at 130 Huey Stockstill Rd., due to a buildup of propane gas, according to Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department officials. Coast Electric technicians were actively working at the scene on Thursday and Friday, making repairs to damaged electrical equipment.
