POPLARVILLE —
With the completion of the new Poplarville fire station on Mississippi Highway 53 and a small business strip mall on U.S. Highway 11 across from the funeral home, local citizens are talking about the appearance and quality of other businesses in town.
They also are hoping these two newest buildings will raise the bar for future new construction.
Earlier this month, aldermen discussed how numerous citizens had been commenting on the appearance of Poplarville and how they admire the quality of those new buildings.
Some have said they hoped this would become a trend in building for the city of Poplarville.
Those comments spurred conversation among board members to the point they have begun looking at other cities such as Hattiesburg and Purvis for possible ideas to change Poplarville’s building ordinance as a guide for future commercial construction within the city limits.
The board discussed establishing guidelines specifically for the future construction of metal buildings. The ordinance could establish possible guidelines as simple as placing a partial brick façade on any part of a metal building facing a city street.
Alderman Shirley Wiltshire has been talking about doing something along these lines since she was elected to serve on the Poplarville Board of Aldermen.
She has collected photographs in other areas where cities are purposely developing their business landscape in an aesthetically pleasing manner. Although she and the other aldermen have discussed the issue, they have not acted.
Since local citizens are beginning to talk about the issue, the board asked City Attorney Martin Smith to pursue possible changes to the city’s building ordinance to address the facades of future commercial structures.
“We would like to see commercial developments add to the aesthetics of the city so that it will make people know we care about what our city looks like,” Wiltshire said.
