PICAYUNE —
Unused or unwanted prescription medication can be safely disposed of at the Picayune Police Department this Saturday.
The event will be a collaboration between the Picayune Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration and will give residents a safe way to dispose of their old, unused prescription medication, according to a release from the local police department.
“The purpose of Take Back Days is to make sure unused medicine doesn’t end up being abused,” said Chief Bryan Dawsey.
Unused prescription medication is a problem that many people may not know exists, the release states.
“Unwanted and unused prescriptions hanging around the house could end up in the wrong hands and sometimes children’s,” Dawsey said in the release. “We’ve had people who have had maybe a parent or a grandparent die and when they clean out their medicine cabinet they’ll find old prescriptions and ask what to do with them. In the past all we could tell them is to flush it down the toilet, but now we have a better and safer option by teaming up with the DEA.”
Anyone with medication they would like to safely dispose of can stop by the Criminal Justice Center, located at 328 S. Main Street, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday.
“Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs,” said Capt. Jeremy Magri in the release.
“Medicines left in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse,” said Capt. Chad Dorn in the release.

Who’s ready for The Big One on New Madrid fault?
It’s a bleak scenario. A massive earthquake along the New Madrid fault kills or injures 60,000 people in Tennessee. A quarter of a million people are homeless. The Memphis airport — the country’s biggest air terminal for packages — goes off-line. Major oil and gas pipelines across Tennessee rupture, causing shortages in the Northeast. In Missouri, another 15,000 people are hurt or dead. Cities and towns throughout the central United States lose power and water for months. Losses stack up to hundreds of billions of dollars.
