Hill announces candidacy

PICAYUNE — I am Angela Burks Hill, your true conservative Republican candidate for State Senate District 40, which covers a large portion of Pearl River, Marion, and Walthall counties, including the cities of Picayune, Columbia, and Tylertown.

I have never held public office before. I have worked in small business and in both public and private school systems. I graduated valedictorian of Picayune High School in 1983. I attended Pearl River Community College and the University of Southern Mississippi where I received a bachelor’s Degree from the College of Science and Technology, and was named Most Outstanding Undergraduate in Science Education gaining endorsements in biology, chemistry, and general science.

I have been married for 28 years to Byron Hill, a 29 year employee of Mississippi Power Co. We have two children. Our son, Andrew, 24, is employed at Stennis Space Center, and our daughter, Kelly, is an honor student at Pearl River Central High School and a member of the Blue Angels Dance Team. We have two grandchildren, Ethan and Aiden. I am the oldest grandchild of the late Delos H. and Melva Rester Burks, and the late Foch and Ruth Blackmon. We are members of Roseland Park Baptist Church where I serve on the school committee, and my husband serves as trustee chairman, deacon, and member of the long range planning committee.

I became interested in government around the age of 8 as I listened to the experiences of my grandfather Delos Burks, who represented Miss. District 108 and served as both Deputy and Assistant Attorney General for Mississippi. My maternal grandfather, Foch Blackmon served in the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Dept., and my uncle, Deputy Chief David Ervin, gave 28 years of service to the Picayune Police Dept.

I have signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge through the Americans for Tax Reform organization and pledge not to make public office a life-long career. I believe education and business development are crucial in making Mississippi more prosperous.

The American College Test should not be the first time our students are compared with other students across the nation. The Mississippi Curriculum Tests are overly utilized and only compare us with other students in Mississippi.

We must  provide better access to vocational/technical programs in the high schools. We must not let the fine arts programs fall by the wayside as they motivate students to stay in school and provide scholarship opportunities.

Teachers must be given the resources and autonomy to “teach meaningfully”, and they must be given the authority and support to manage discipline in the classroom.

I will work to reduce the tax burdens on our Mississippi businesses. I will fight for Mississippi’s oil and natural gas industry and for the continued advancement of Stennis Space Center.

I believe Mississippi should protect its sovereignty by scrutinizing federal funds coming into the state with attached mandates. I will work to establish a dialogue with Mississippi’s Washington delegation and with municipal and county officials throughout District 40.

Southerners have been criticized by President Obama and the national media for “clinging to their guns and their Bibles”. I say Mississippi’s Christian conservative values including respect for the unborn and the second amendment are virtues we shall not apologize for. I believe it is time to use the abilities I have been blessed with to bring strong, ethical, conservative leadership to Mississippi Senate District 40.
