PEARL RIVER COUNTY —
Pearl River County’s unemployment rate is on the rise, jumping almost a full percentage point.
According to information released by the Mississippi Department of Employment Security, the unemployment rate for Pearl River County in September was 9.5 percent, a jump from the previous month’s rate of 8.6 percent. In September of 2011 the county’s unemployment rate was 11.5 percent.
State-wide, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 9.2 percent for September, a small jump from August’s rate of 9.1 percent. In September of 2011, the unemployment rate in Mississippi was 10.9 percent.
Nationwide the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 7.8 percent, a decrease from previous month’s rate of 8.1. The rate in September of 2011 was 9 percent.
Seasonally adjusted rates take into consideration patterns such as weather, holidays, school schedules and other regularly occurring events that contribute to employment rates. Only nationwide and state-wide percentages are adjusted.
Unadjusted unemployment rates show Mississippi had an unemployment rate of 9 percent, an increase from August’s rate of 8.5 percent, the release states. A year ago September’s unadjusted unemployment rate was 10.8 percent.
Nationwide the unadjusted unemployment rate was 7.6 percent, a drop from the previous month’s rate of 8.2 percent. Last year in September, the nation’s unadjusted unemployment rate was 8.8 percent.
Twenty-two counties in Mississippi reported unemployment rates of less than the state’s average of 9 percent. Rankin reported the lowest rate with 5.9 percent, Madison reported 6.5 percent and DeSoto and Lafayette Counties reported 6.6 percent unemployment.
Four counties reported unemployment rates greater than 15 percent, Clay County with 17.1 percent and Holmes County with 16 percent had the highest rates, the release states.

The brick walkway around the historical marker is coordinated by the Poplarville Rotary Club, Poplarville Area Chamber of Commerce and Pearl River Community College.
