PICAYUNE —
High winds roared through the south end of Pearl River County on Saturday causing some damage to structures and knocking over trees.
A ride through the county found debris from a number of trees volunteer firefighters had to cut from roads after Saturday’s storm. The winds also caused damage to a number of sheds, and damaged a couple of roofs on homes.
Emergency Operations Manager Danny Manley said most of the damage was sustained in the south end of the county between McNeill and Nicholson. Reported damage included sheds, two homes on Jesse Spence Road and a shed on Bouie Road.
Another shed on Lumpkin road also was damaged by winds. Most of the damage appeared to be from winds that pushed in one direction rather than blown in several directions as if by a tornado.
Sharron Tomes, who lives at the home on Lumpkin Road, said her husband was outside putting lawn mowers and other equipment in their larger shed when the winds started blowing hard. Tomes said the strong winds lasted only a couple of minutes, but according to her recollection were stronger than what she experienced during Hurricane Katrina.
Debris from the shed was still strewn across her yard on Monday, and a part of the tin roof from the shed was still lodged in a large oak tree, bent around a branch.
“All I could see was stuff blowing across the yard,” Tomes said.
Three or four trees in her yard were partially uprooted, also. All the damage in her yard appeared to have been caused by winds blowing in one direction.
In the Caesar community, two homes on Jesse Spence Road suffered roof damage. Terry Shaw said he lost a number of shingles on his home, forcing him to put up a blue tarp reminiscent of the blue roofs after Katrina. However, a home next to Shaw’s suffered greater damage, losing part of the roof and suffering water damage to a bedroom.
Steve Spence, who lives a stone’s throw from Shaw, lost a shed to the storm after two large oaks fell. Spence said the shed and both trees all survived Katrina but didn’t hold up to Saturday’s storm. A second shed on Spence’s property, built after Katrina to withstand 140 mile per hour winds, was still standing but the roll-down door was blown in.
Manley said a number of volunteer fire departments also had damage to roll-down doors caused by the high winds. Pine Grove, Caesar and Steephollow Volunteer Fire Departments all had roll-down doors blown in on their truck bays.
There also was a report of a family being stuck in their car during the storm as trees fell around them on Dumas Bailey Road and a report of a motor home being tossed onto a boat, Manley said.
Luckily no injuries were reported, the emergency operations manager said.
Manley said he would like to thank the volunteer firefighters for their effort in clearing roads and responding to the large number of calls.
