PICAYUNE —
A review of “Rosin,” by Omer Haas, will be presented by Gloria Crassons at noon on Tuesday, August 18th, for the debut of the 2012-2013 Brown Bag Book Review season at the Crosby Memorial Library.
Guests might be curious to find the answers to questions such as: If the secretion from a tree is called resin, why is the title called “Rosin?” What river is called the “singing river” and why? What is “God’s music?” What has happened to the tung oil industry? All of these questions and more will be answered at the book review next Tuesday.
Omer Haas was born and reared on a turpentine orchard, in what is now Hancock County, where Kiln, Miss. is located. It is so named because it held several kilns which produced tar for export.
Crasson’s grandmother, Odile Haas Gaunt, was a cousin of the author and and along with six siblings told him many facts which he used to write his book.
As an educated forester, he wanted to tell the story of the tung oil trees and those who lived and worshipped among them. He originally set out to write a technical piece on resin production and realized that he needed to write a fictional account of an operation which was technically accurate.
His final product traces three generations of a fictional family, the McBrides, throughout a period spanning 1814 to 1940, beginning in South Carolina and ending in Miss.. It is a story filled with adventure, love, tragedy, wars, jealousy, death, race- relations, and poetry.
It is hoped that those who attend will leave wanting to learn more about an industry which was important to the development of our community and county.
Everyone is encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch and enjoy drinks and dessert supplied by the Friends of the Library.
