PICAYUNE —
Andrew York, classical guitar great and brother of Picayune resident, Theresa Dischinger will be in town today.
The world renowned Grammy winner, will be coming through to visit his sister and soak up a little local flavor, says Dischinger.
“He has such a hectic schedule; this will be a nice rest for him after teaching a Masters Class in Pensacola, Fla.,” she says.
How did York get started on the road to international acclaim and how did Dischinger end up in Picayune?
She says, “He was a child prodigy. He was five and our mother could not find anyone who could teach him anything. He has perfect pitch and could play when he picked up his first guitar. Our mother ended up driving him from W. Va. to Baltimore, Md. where she found someone who was actually advanced enough to teach him something. I wish I had his gift for hearing pitch, but I will settle for looks.”
Dischinger and her husband moved to Picayune via Slidell, La. because her husband worked in the oil industry.
“I always loved the hometown feel of Picayune and this is our home now. My husband commutes to a different state for work but we live here. I love it and am happy to share it with my brother before he goes off to New York City for a Friday concert in Christ and St. Stephen’s Church, 120 West 69th Street,” she says.
York comes from a musical family. His dad played a guitar and his mother sang. He studied music in college and ended up with a Masters Degree from USC. He also studied in Spain on a Del Amo Foundation while attending USC.
He is the only USC grad to receive the Alumni of the Year award twice, once in 1997 with the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet and in 2003 for his solo music career. He has spent 16 years with the Grammy winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet.
In 2006 he left the Quartet to pursue a solo career.
The “Classical-Guitar-World.com” site says his compositions have been recorded by some of the greats of classical guitar, such as, John Williams, Scott Tennant, William Kanengiser and Christopher Parkening.
The site also says his music is published worldwide by the likes of Mel Bay Publications, Hal Leonard, Doberman-Yippan, Gendai and Ricordi of London.
York was born in 1958 in Atlanta and grew up in Virginia, attending James Madison University.
Says Wikipedia: “He has performed in 30 countries. Fifty of his works are published in many varieties — solo, duo, trio, quartet and ensemble. He has appeared in three DVDs, recorded or appeared as soloist on more than 10 CDs and has published a three-volume work on in-depth jazz study for classical guitarists.”
And his credits go on and on.
