68th Annual Pearl River County Fair and Livestock Show

POPLARVILLE — The 68th Annual Pearl River County Fair and Livestock Show is just around the corner. Mark September 10th through 15th on your calendar, and plan to be part of the festivities held at the Pearl River County Fairgrounds in Poplarville. There is something for everyone.

Now is the time to take a look at the adult and youth exhibits lists and gather up those items you have been working on over the past year and enter them in the fair. Whether it is items you have canned, sewn by hand, quilted, constructed, or drawn, there is a category for just about everyone’s unique talents.

The indoor exhibits will be displayed in the old National Guard Armory on the corner of Hwy. 26 and Hwy. 11. Exhibits will be checked in on Monday, September 10th, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. You can stop by the Extension Office to get your fair number and labels for your exhibits. Judging will take place from 9 a.m. and noon on Wednesday, September 12th. The Exhibit Building will then be open for public viewing beginning at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. It will be open all day on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, September 13th through 15th. Items must be picked up on Monday, September 17th, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

If inside exhibits aren’t your thing, then maybe you want to show off your prize rabbits or poultry, or you might even want to enter your beef or dairy cattle, swine, goats, or sheep in the livestock show. Poultry and rabbits should be checked in at the fairgrounds on Tuesday, September 11th, from 1 until 6 p.m. Livestock including beef and dairy cattle, swine, goats, and sheep, should be pre-registered and also checked in at the fairgrounds on Tuesday, September 11th, from 3 until 8 p.m.

Come out to the small animal show, and watch our youth show their prize poultry and rabbits. The youth will be judged on showmanship techniques and more. This show will give more youth the opportunity to show their animals and be judged. The show will take place on Wednesday, September 12th, at 6 p.m.

The beef cattle, goat, sheep, and swine show will be held on Thursday, September 13th, beginning at 5 p.m., and the dairy cattle show will be on Friday, September 14th, at 8:30 a.m. Both of these shows will give you a sneak peek of our county 4-H members’ project animals that they have been working with over the past few months.

If you like horses, then you won’t want to miss the horse show for youth that will be held on Saturday, September 8th, at 10 a.m. There are events and classes for all horse enthusiasts. The show will be open to youth ages 18 and under. Check in will be between 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, but entries will be taken all day during the show for any events that have not taken place. There are no entry fees. Entry forms will be completed, registration papers will be checked on registered horses, and current negative Coggins tests will be checked on Saturday morning.

Classes will include halter, western pleasure, western horsemanship, goat ribbon pull, arena race, mounted or unmounted goat tying, 3D barrel racing, 3D pole bending, and 3D stake race. You can pick up a copy of the rules, the patterns, and a list of classes at the Extension Office. Premiums and ribbons will be awarded to winners of all classes. High Point Champion Rider will be awarded to the rider who has accumulated the most points in each of the three age divisions for the entire show.

There will be a talent show for both youth and adults on Tuesday, September 11th, at 6 p.m. in the arena. Prizes will be awarded to the winners. There is a $10 entry fee that should be submitted with your entry form. Stop by the Extension Office to pick up a form or give us a call and we will mail you one.

Friday, September 14th, will be a fun day for all the kids. Come join us under the big arena for the field day events that will get kicked off at 11a.m. Or, join us for the pet show beginning at 2 p.m. in the small arena. Both of these events are always a lot of fun.

If rides are your thing, then you won’t want to miss the carnival, which kicks off on Tuesday, September 11th, and continues through Saturday night, September 15th. Ticket prices are $1.25 for a single ticket, and a family pack of 20 tickets is $20. Each ride is 2-4 tickets. Armbands for unlimited rides will be available on Wednesday night, September 12th, from 6 until 10 p.m. for $17 each, and again on Friday, September 14th, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. for $20 each. Half-price tickets will be available from noon until 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 15th.

On both Friday and Saturday nights, September 14th and 15th, there will be a concert beginning at 6 p.m. nightly. Angela Easley will perform on Friday night, and Lisa Albritton will take the stage on Saturday night. The rodeo will then get underway both nights beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets for the concert and rodeo are $5 for ages 6-12, $15 for ages 13 and up, and free for ages 5 and below. They can be purchased at several local businesses in Poplarville and Picayune, or you can get yours at the Extension office in Poplarville.

The fair booklet contains a schedule of events, the adult and youth fair exhibits lists, registration forms for the field day events, pet show, and talent show, and rules and regulations concerning livestock and horses. Many local businesses have fair booklets, or you can stop by the Extension office to get a copy. For more information, call the Extension Office at 601-403-2280.

At the recent Master Naturalist training held at the Crosby Arboretum, Master Gardener Susan Swope discussed how using more natives in our landscapes can save us both time and money. She went on to describe some methods well-suited to lazy gardeners. One was to create planting beds in lawn areas. First, mow the grass as short as possible, then add layers of newspaper or cardboard, add a thick organic layer such as leaves, and there you go— less grass to mow.

On their recent tour, fifth grade students from Lamar Christian School in Purvis encountered a seemingly endless variety of wildlife, ranging from crawfish to inchworms, to writhing masses of spiny, newly-emerged caterpillars. There is no such thing as a “typical” walk around the Arboretum’s Pond Journey and Pitcher Plant Bog. Every venture reveals something new to every group of visitors.

  • Reba Beebe.jpg Beebe returns to Main Street

“I was excited when the Picayune Main Street, Inc. Board of Directors asked me to return as manager to the local Main Street program. Also, extremely grateful to Picayune City Manager Jim Luke, Mayor Ed Pinero and city council for their blessings and approval to relocate our office,” says Beebe. “One of my favorite sayings is ‘There is nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer.’ I have to say, I had a blast working on committees, projects and events with the most dedicated staff and group of volunteers in Pearl River County from March 2005 to May 2010. I look forward to getting new committees in place and working with ‘seasoned’ volunteers as well as new volunteers who share the same passion and desire to keep Picayune moving forward.”
