PICAYUNE — Mollie Jackson is this week’s Picayune Item Super Senior. Jackson has devoted her life to education, her church and community. A teacher at Pearl River Central for a total of 34 years she taught special education for 28 years as well as summer and night school for adults, for 12 years. “I loved my years in education; I only gave it up because my mother lost her vision and could no longer take care of my disabled sister. I would have been in the field much longer if not for that,” she says. “I enjoyed the special education children. There is so much that those young people can do and accomplish.” Jackson is a mother of six daughters, 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. She continues to take care of one of her great-grandchildren after school each day. She laughs and says, “I have a big family, so I tell them once you have a baby, the baby gets the presents." Since retiring she is very active in the community. Through her membership and contributions in the Retired Education Personnel of Mississippi, she has continued her support of fellow retired teachers. She is a political activist and faithfully attends New Haven Baptist Church. “I have taught a Sunday School class for 25 years. I am also president of my mission and of the Usher Board at church. I am the financial secretary of Springhill Triumph District Singing Mission and secretary of the Democratic Executive Committee. “Since I have been retired, I have thoroughly enjoyed working at my church and in my district. I stay busy; I just love to help others,” Jackson says.
