PICAYUNE —
Lucille Gasecki is the winner of the 2012 2nd Annual June Summer Blues Out Poster Contest and this week’s Picayune Item Super Senior.
The 71-years-young grandmother of six has been a tour-de-force in community volunteerism for 50 years since retiring from her career in social work, in 1962.
She says, “I have lived in Picayune for over 20 years now and I love the people in the community. I found St. Paul’s Episcopal Church six years ago and I have faithfully attended and served there ever since. I am the Lector there as well as the art teacher once a month. I love to serve in my church.
Kathleen Potts, recently retired Rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, says, “She is a very generous, giving, loving person who freely shares her artistic talents with anyone who wishes to participate. She shares her faith by actions and her faith is core in her identity. Anyone who knows her is aware of her deep faith.”
In addition to her service to St. Paul’s, Gasecki also gives back to her community through donating her time and talents in art instruction
Greater Picayune Arts Council (GPAC) President, Carolyn Terry, says, “She is the driving force behind a lot of things that get done. That is why she is the Events Chair at GPAC. I knew she would see things through and come up with new ideas.
“This has certainly been the case with the art classes at Brandi’s Hope. She retired in La. as a supervisor working with adults with disabilities in a New Orleans mental health facility. She felt that was a particularly rewarding time in her life and wanted to start a program through GPAC where adults with challenges could be taught art. “This was the beginning of the program at Brandi’s Hope, where every third Saturday, she goes with other instructors and teaches an art class. I hear nothing but good comments from all involved.”
April Holifield says, “Lucille is very talented. She not only paints; she sews and can do anything creative. Also, it is so inspiring to see her work with the mentally challenged. She’s always there to help and sees the bright side of every situation. She is the same way in her interactions with people, she sees the good in them.”
Carolyn Terry, “It is a really good thing for our community to have someone like her, who is so talented and gives so cheerfully from her heart. She is very motivated and will send me emails at 10 or 11 p.m. about an idea she has for an upcoming program. She does a wonderful job in the community; she cares about people.”
Now, Gasecki’s art will grace t-shirts and posters for the 2012 June Summer Blues Out which will be held June 2nd.
“I’m so excited to be this year’s winner,” says Gasecki.
GPAC members applaud the recognition of someone who is known for always working hard in the background, and never wanting the spotlight.
Fellow GPAC member, Harriet Greulich, says, “I can’t say enough good things about Lucille. I don’t think she ever meets a stranger; she has a heart for mentally challenged people. She is an all around fantastic, outgoing person and a very good friend. Our town is lucky to have her.”

Arboretum Paths
On their recent tour, fifth grade students from Lamar Christian School in Purvis encountered a seemingly endless variety of wildlife, ranging from crawfish to inchworms, to writhing masses of spiny, newly-emerged caterpillars. There is no such thing as a “typical” walk around the Arboretum’s Pond Journey and Pitcher Plant Bog. Every venture reveals something new to every group of visitors.

Beebe returns to Main Street
“I was excited when the Picayune Main Street, Inc. Board of Directors asked me to return as manager to the local Main Street program. Also, extremely grateful to Picayune City Manager Jim Luke, Mayor Ed Pinero and city council for their blessings and approval to relocate our office,” says Beebe. “One of my favorite sayings is ‘There is nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer.’ I have to say, I had a blast working on committees, projects and events with the most dedicated staff and group of volunteers in Pearl River County from March 2005 to May 2010. I look forward to getting new committees in place and working with ‘seasoned’ volunteers as well as new volunteers who share the same passion and desire to keep Picayune moving forward.”
