PICAYUNE — Editor:

I would like to address the problem of unwanted animals being dumped in rural areas within the county. To those animal owners that do not want their animals anymore, for whatever reason; please be responsible and try to find a new home for your animal.

Place an ad in your local newspapcr for a FREE dog/cat; people are always looking for a dog or cat that is free. Put the ad in the free paper the swap shop or post notes on bulletin boards around town in your local quick stops! feed stores, etc. As a last resort, take your unwanted animal to the local animal shelter, (yes, the animal shelter does take animals from outside of the city limits, I called and checked) it will be well taken care of and has a good chance of being adopted.

The cruelest and most irresponsible thing that you can do, and that I am seeing a lot of is; dropping the animal off in a rural area, where it can suffer from starvation, poisoning, get shot, or be hit by a car.
