Obey the police officer before you kill a child!
My name is Dot Breland, better known to most people as Miss Dot. Today August 13 I had the scare of my life while waiting for my niece to get out of high school. I was parked on Goodyear Blvd. facing East. There was a police officer directing traffic at the intersection of Goodyear Blvd. and Kirkwood St. The children from Westside School were waiting to cross over to the library when a white truck speeding failed to respond to the police officer’s command to stop. This officer stepped into the traffic lane to get the truck to stop but the truck kept going. Thank God no one was hurt!
Again seconds later another vehicle did the same thing, did not respond to the officer’s command to stop. The children had just stepped off the curb to start their destination to the library. The officer was trying to get the vehicle to stop and get the kids back on the curb. The officer stepped in front of the vehicle which came to a stop. Again thank God no one was hurt!
While the officer was attempting to stop traffic so the buses could enter Goodyear Blvd. again an SUV failed to respond to the officer’s command. Again the officer steps toward the traffic lane and throws up his hands and yells at the driver of the SUV. She looks back at the officer like she had done nothing wrong.
Everyone knows that school is in progress and at 3 p.m. there will be children of all ages on the streets from elementary, junior high and high school.
Please put down your cell phones and turn down your radio so you can be alert to your surroundings. Our police officers are out there doing their job to protect our children but if we don’t obey their commands someone will get hurt. Please, please watch out for our children. Would you want someone to run over your child? Parents, while picking up your child be aware if someone is not obeying the officer and help him by getting a tag number. I failed to get all the digits today. Also to the students please do not just cross the road anywhere. Please cross at the crosswalk for your protection!
