I spent September 11, 2001, as much of the world did: on the Internet, sharing in the global outpouring of shock and grief. I will never forget the juxtaposition of the ruined skyscrapers against an appalling blue sky. Americans of all backgrounds queued to give blood, to donate, to enlist in an imminent war. Others sought ways to serve at home through national service.
AmeriCorps members are in classrooms, community centers, agencies and nonprofits throughout Mississippi. They are empowering individuals with disabilities to take back their lives, and fostering an attitude of hard work and play within Mississippi’s youth. We relied on them in the aftermath of Katrina and the BP Oil Disaster, and welcomed them into our communities during this year’s flooding and tornadoes.
9/11’s tenth anniversary has been designated a Day of Service and Remembrance by President Barack Obama and Governor Haley Barbour. The Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Service (MCVS) and AmeriCorps Mississippi will pay tribute to our military veterans and first responders, and invite you to roll up your sleeves and join us in a day of charitable acts and heartfelt remembrance. We will never forget the atrocities of that day, but we choose to honor the heroism, kindness and unity that lives in the heart of America. Together, we will remember by doing.
