Legion family donates $1000 to Senior Center

PICAYUNE — When the Senior Center of South Pearl River County made a public appeal for donations to be eligible for a matching fund grant, members of American Legion Post 73, Sons of the Legion and Ladies Auxiliary came to their aid and donated a check for $1,000.

This donation enabled the center to achieve its goal to receive a grant for matching funds. These funds will be used by the center to offer more hot meals and resources for local community members.

Senior Center Executive Director Darlene Adams tearfully told members of the Post 73 that words could not express the appreciation of the center and area senior citizens in need.

“Sometimes we are the only hot meal these people receive,” she said. “Funding has been progressively cut each year for us and the need is greater than ever in the senior citizen community,” Adams said.

Post 73 Treasurer Dwyer Cook said, “This is what we are all about. We work with other non-profits all of the time to make things better for our fellow community members. We live here too.

“We buy oranges and other things from the local Lions to fill Christmas baskets for distribution. That money we give them goes right back into the community as well. We all have to help each other help our community.”

Post Judge Advocate Buddy McDonald, said, “I’m proud of the things the American Legion, the Auxiliary, and the Sons do for our local community, veterans and widows in need.”
